Columbia/Boone County Public Health & Human Services provides a wide range of services aimed to improve health for the residents of Columbia and Boone County, and one recent area of focus has been providing healthy eating and active living support for early childhood education centers and schools. In late 2018, our Fit-Tastic! newsletter featured Sunshine Family Home Center’s efforts to implement health and wellness for children in their care.
“We love 12345 Fit-Tastic because it gave us the motivation to make an active change” – Rose, from Sunshine Family Home Center
Laura McCulloch, MPH, CHES, a Health Educator at Columbia/Boone County started that initiative and has engaged additional schools and early care centers to examine how their policies and practices can be structured to create a healthy environment for kids. When centers or schools engage in this work, they have the opportunity to qualify for a 12345 Fit-Tastic! certification at a bronze, silver or gold level. Additionally, they can earn equipment to support healthy eating or physical activity at their center. To date, there have been over 15 centers to become Fit-Tastic! certified and nearly 30 have joined the Healthy Lifestyles Initiative through fittastic.org as a first step in the certification process.
