Students Collect Cash Awards, Build Advocacy Skills at Youth Summit
In March, KC Healthy Kids hosted their 2019 Champions for Health Youth Summit, where students who received awards for their photo contest entries were presented with their cash awards, got to meet with their elected officials, and attended breakout sessions, and went home with new advocacy skills to help them work with their school leaders to create a healthier environment for their community.
Elected officials from the students’ communities joined them for lunch to hear about their healthy schools projects. Jackson County Legislator Crystal Williams pledge to raise an additional $1,000 to support the goals winners in Jackson County schools. The poetry slam team from Lincoln College Preparatory Academy gave a quick workshop on how to present with confidence. They asked the crowd for prompts, then spent the morning writing a piece that they performed at the Lunch & Listen. Students attended breakout sessions presented by Kansas City Community Gardens, Urban Yogis, Fuel Up to Play 60, 12345 Fit-Tastic! and our own Farm to School Academy.
